Keeping you updated on my pursuits in Kenya

Hi everyone! I'm back in Kenya at the school I volunteered at two years ago (OLPHEC). I'll be here 6 months... and hopefully more :)

It is wonderful to hear these individual stories about the children like Rufus. The stats about poverty, AIDS, unemployment and so on are important but I find I need that personal sense of involvement in the children's lives. They are of course…

Rufus Wachuka

Rufus came to OLPHEC two years ago and immediately began to excel. He quickly began to compete for the top spot academically, was named head prefect and is one of the better athletes at the school. Rufus never knew his father and his mother ran out on him when he was only six, leaving him to live with his grandmother. At home Rufus lived with his grandmother who he helped during holidays by working in the fields and as a day laborer to earn some extra money. About eight months ago Rufus’…See More

Hello

Hello this is my first post, I have just discovered the site. I visited OLPHEC last month, just for an hour or so, I was visiting with my daughter, under the auspices of Kijani Kenya UK. I used to live and work near Naro Moru during the 70s and we left Kenya to come back to UK when my daughter was 5. She's now 33 and pregnant with her 2nd child. We are hoping to further support OLPHEC from the UK, through fund raising and sponsorship. I'm also hoping to visit again in november 2010 with a…See More

I met Mwangi last month when I visited OLOPHEC. He is the most beautiful, friendly, happy, open natured child you could imagine and all the children see him as a kind of 'pet' - when all the children were singing for me and my daughter he…

Andrew Aknoit

Andrew AknoitAknoit came to OLPHEC on January 17th, 2006 when he was eleven years old. Aknoit is the youngest of four children from a family of the Turkana tribe and originally comes from a village called Rumuruti in the Rift Valley. When Aknoit was six years old his father was attacked and killed by robbers. When Aknoit’s mother heard the news she went into shock and then died, herself, three months later. Visiting Marura Women's Group

Marura Women’s Group is a women’s collective located just on the other side of the Ol Pejeta Conservency fence about five kilometers from the main gate. The group consists of 250 women from many of the surrounding communities including Matanya, Burgret, and others. When we arrived at the meeting place for the group meeting we were greeted at the street by the women who were singing and dancing. This is the fourth or fifth time I’ve received this type of a greeting and while it is incredibly… Continue
